HP LaserJet Pro 400 M401dn

The HP LaserJet Pro 400 M401dn ($399 direct) is far from the fastest printer in its price class, but if you care more about output quality than speed, it may well be the printer you want. It delivers above par quality across the board, scores well on paper handling, and throws in a few extras, including a touch-screen control panel and the ability to print files from a USB memory key. If you need high-quality output and aren't overly concerned with speed, it's a potentially good choice.

Much like the similarly priced Canon imageClass LBP6670dn ($399 direct, 3.5 stars) that I recently reviewed, the M401dn is aimed primarily at micro and small offices and workgroups. However, it's also suitable for a home office with unusually heavy duty print needs, assuming you can find room for it. At 10.7 by 14.4 by 14.5 inches (HWD), it's a little smaller than the Canon printer, but still a little large to comfortably share a desk with.

Most of the reason for the large size comes from the paper handling, which includes a built-in duplexer (for printing on both sides of a page), a 250-sheet paper drawer, and a 50-sheet multipurpose tray. This should be enough for most small offices, but if you need more, you can add a 500-sheet second tray ($125 direct).

Also worth mention is that the printer supports an assortment of mobile printing features, including HP ePrint (for printing through the cloud), Apple AirPrint (for printing from iOS devices), and various Web-based printer apps. It doesn't offer Wi-Fi, but HP says that the HP LaserJet Pro 400 M401dw ($449 direct), is the same printer with Wi-Fi added. All the comments in this review should apply to the dw model as well.

HP LaserJet Pro 400 M401dn

Setup and Speed
Setting up the printer was standard fare. For my tests, I connected it to a wired network and ran the tests from a Windows Vista system.

HP rates the M401dn at 35 pages per minute (ppm), which is the speed you should see when printing text files without much formatting. On our business applications suite, however, it was surprisingly slow for the rating. I timed it (using QualityLogic's hardware and software for timing), at an effective 5.9 ppm. In comparison, the Editors' Choice OKI B431dn ($349.99 direct, 4 stars) came in at 11.1 ppm, and the LBP6670dn, which is also rated at 35 ppm, came in at 14.8 ppm in simplex (one sided) mode. The Canon printer was even faster than the HP printer when printing in duplex (two sided) mode, at 10.3 ppm.

Output Quality and Other Issues
What the M401dn lacks in speed, it at least partly makes up for in output quality, with above-par scores across the board. Text quality isn't quite a match for the best looking mono laser output, but it's suitable for printing small-size fonts readably. Depending on how demanding an eye you have, you may consider it suitable for desktop publishing applications.

Graphics output is easily good enough for any internal business need, including printing PowerPoint handouts. Most people would also consider it suitable for printing, say, graphics in reports going to an important client. Photo quality, similarly, is better than most mono lasers can manage, which makes it easily good enough for printing photos in a client newsletter or the like.

One potential issue for the printer is its running cost. The claimed 2.4 cents per page is lower than you'll find with many printers in this price range. The LBP6670dn, for example, claims a 2.8 cent per page cost. On the other hand, it's higher than some other printers, with the B431dn in particular claiming 1.8 cents per page. A 0.6 cent per page difference works out to $60 per 10,000 pages. Depending on how much you print, that can add up to a difference of hundreds of dollars in total cost of ownership over the life of the printer.

I also ran into an issue with trying to print from Photoshop 7 using the printer's higher-quality modes, with the printer giving an error message instead of printing. I don't consider this a major issue, however, both because the problem doesn't show up at all resolution settings, and because HP has already found a fix for it. HP sent me the current beta version of an the upgraded driver. A quick spot check proved that it has no trouble printing with the same files and settings that the current driver reliably chokes on.

The trio of HP, Canon, and Oki Data printers offers a variety of choices. If you need a basic workhorse printer for lots of printing, and running costs are a key concern, the OKI B431dn is probably your printer of choice in this group. If you care more about top speed, the Canon LBP6670dn may be more attractive. (And note that speed may be more of an issue if you plan to print in duplex most of the time, since duplexing takes longer.)

If top-quality output is most important for you, however, or you want to take advantage of built-in mobile printing features, the HP LaserJet Pro 400 M401dn is the obvious choice, and it may well be the printer you want.

Hearing Protection Devices and What They Can Do for You? | Anti ...

Health and Fitness | Anti-Aging | * Written by Tim Hunsaker | Monday, 30 July 2012 13:43 | Word Count: 536

Using a hearing protection device will help to decrease the level of intensity for sound traveling to the eardrum. There are two different forms: earmuffs and earplugs. Earplugs - These are small inserts that go into the outside ear canal. In order to be effective, they need to block the ear canal completely with a tight seal. There are many sizes and shapes that you can choose from to fit inside of your ear canal. Some of them are custom-made to fit into your individual ear. People who have issues keeping the earplugs in their ears can have them fitted to a headband.

Earmuffs - The earmuffs are made to fit over the entire ear to help form a seal that blocks air from coming in. An adjustable band works to hold them in place. They need to be fitted snugly to make sure the ear canal is blocked off.

When your earplugs or earmuffs are properly fitted into place they help to cut the level of sound by 15 to 30 decibels. Between the two different types of protection devices, they both have been proven to work just as well at reducing sound.

However, earplugs can give you better hearing protection for lower frequency noises, while earmuffs are better at protecting against any high frequency noises, such as an airplane taking off. For the sounds that are higher frequencies, try to think about the treble keys on a piano. Whereas, lower frequency sounds are more along the lines of the bass keys on the piano.

Using earplugs and earmuffs at the same time help to eliminate an additional ten decibels more than just using one of the hearing protection methods by themselves. Whenever you are in a situation that involves noise levels exceeding 105 decibels, you should consider the importance of using two forms of protection. It is imperative to understand that simply placing a cotton ball or tissue paper inside of the ear canal is only going to reduce the noise levels by seven decibels.

Excessive amounts of noise exposure could be the result of a live concert, as well as other venues where there are amplification devices being used. Damage sustained from music is just as permanent as many of the other means out there. Recently, they developed a new type of earplugs for musicians and professional engineers to help handle any difficult noise situations. They are designed to eliminate the plugged ear effect and help maintain even sound reduction when faced with varying frequencies.

Otherwise, if the ear is plugged, it will end up making someone's voice sound deeper and fuller of bass, not to mention louder. Try this yourself by blocking your ears with your fingers and then speaking. You will end up with the plugged ear effect.

Motherhood Uncensored: BlogHer, School, Meds, and My Mom ...

This will be the first year in seven years that I won't be at BlogHer, but the first weekend of any month is killer for a family with a spouse in the Reserves (mandatory UTA weekend - don't ask me what that stands for other than "I can't get out of this, honey, unless I'm dead") and if you have kids in the South going to school since they start on August 6.?

Take that in for a moment, especially if you grew up in the Northeast like me and are all like "WTF are you kidding me?"?

And no, it's not because of the weather at the end of the school year because have you been to the south in August??

{Apparently it's based on old farming schedules where kids used to have to help and they decided that it didn't need to be changed since kids are still farming and all. Uh.}

But yes, this means my kids are going to school, a nice little Montessori school that's a bit of a drive (25 minutes each way on sort of slow back roads) and a bit expensive (anyone looking to hire a blogger?) and I still need to have a babysitter for Bridget so it's boxed macaroni and cheese around here for awhile.?

The public schools near us aren't for us, which is code for "they suck," but that sounds judgy ?of other parents in our neighborhood who I know (and like) who send their kids there so we all say "they're not for us."?

But if I can get past the long drives and the crazy schedules, I think I'll get a little more of my sanity back, which was something that was questionable trying to work and homeschool the kids while my husband was gone all the time.

And as much as I was hoping the Viibryd would perform miracles and make me a cheery domestic goddess, all they did was fuck my stomach up so hard that I had to stop taking them.?

I tried with food without food not eating food at all eating lots of food and I couldn't hack it, guys.

And after reading all the bad side effects of the meds (Yay Google!), I decided that I wanted to go see my midwife who wouldn't just give me free samples of some new drug because the hot pharm sales girl dropped them off that morning.?

I was feeling all proud of my non-meds coping skills with all the crap that was going on with my mom's surgery but then my husband chimed in about how much better I was on the meds.?

I just nodded and smiled but inside I kind of wanted to say "better how, like dealing with your crap?" but I didn't until just now and that felt pretty good.?

Are there meds that help you take ALL the recycling out and not just some of it even though it's right near the actual recycling bin because then I would like you to take some of those, dear.?

Yeah. I should probably get back on the meds.?

Thankfully, my mom's big house reveal went over famously, mostly due to the paint and not the actual MAJOR ASS cleaning we all did.?

Note to self: Show parent your awesome work before you have the house painted because that is all she will notice. That and the big television my brother brought her BUT LOOK AT YOUR CLOSET IT'S SO AWESOME MOM! ?

I'm just telling myself she was so shocked and overwhelmed that she couldn't sob thanks while clutching me in her arms like I imagined and instead obsessed about how that she could now watch Thornbirds on YouTube all on her big new television.?

Did I mention I cleaned out her entire house??

Every time she asked me where something important was, like her credit cards or her Spanx or her Brooks Brothers ballet flats and I knew where they were she would let out this "OH PHEW!" And I couldn't help but feel judged like I'm just some asshole who went through all her things and tossed them in the dumpster.?

Your 20-year old underpants? Yes mom. They are gone. Your vintage coach bags? Give me some freaking credit.?

Of course, after I arrived home, I got the obligatory "Where is that book that was on my nightstand?" which led to a whole freaking "I'm feeling like you threw me out in the dumpster" and "Maybe it's because you hate this house!" '

Ah family dysfunction. The reason why people move far away. And drink.?

So while everyone else will be whooping it up in NYC, I'll be avoiding all contact with my mother, staying up until the crack of dawn watching the Olympics, tweeting about the embarrasingly awful coverage by NBC, and trying to figure out how in the hell I have three children that will be in school in a week.?

Oh and counting down the days I head to Mexico for four days all by myself.

What's going on with you?

Iran leader: Stop exporting oil, make new economy

(AP) ? Iran's supreme leader has outlined a new approach to overcome Western sanctions ? stop selling oil and build knowledge-based industries instead.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's says what he calls a "resistant economy" can effectively counter the sanctions.

This month the European Union enforced a ban on oil imports from Iran, after the U.S. stepped up its banking sanctions.

The sanctions aim to force Iran to stop enriching uranium. The West suspects Iran is aiming to build nuclear weapons. Iran denies that.

Khamenei said Iran should stop selling raw materials, including oil, and instead promote "knowledge-based companies which can make a resistant economy more sustainable."

He gave no timetable or details of what would amount to a total overhaul of Iran's economy.

Khamenei's remarks were broadcast on state TV Sunday night.

Olympics: China, U.S. medal in synchronized diving

(AP) LONDON - Wu Minxia is close to crowning herself China's new diving queen.

Wu and partner He Zi won the first diving gold medal of the London Olympics on Sunday, putting the country on a path toward a possible sweep of the eight medals.

They led throughout the five-dive round and totaled 346.20 points in the 3-meter synchronized event.

"It's kind of if they mess up, then you have an opportunity," American silver medalist Abby Johnston said. "Anything can happen in this sport, so you still have that possibility."

Abigail Johnston (top) and Kelci Bryant of the United States compete in the Women's Synchronized 3m Springboard final on Day 2 of the London 2012 Olympic Games, July 29, 2012 in London.

(Credit: Clive Rose/Getty Images) It was Wu's fifth Olympic medal, one short of countrywoman Guo Jingjing's record of six medals. Guo was China's superstar diver until her retirement 1? years ago.

Wu has three golds, one silver and one bronze. She could earn another in the individual springboard event, where she has medaled twice before and will compete against He.

"It feels normal," Wu said in Mandarin. "I really don't have that many emotions."

China won seven of eight golds as the host country four years ago in Beijing and swept the golds at last year's world championships in Shanghai.

"I am impressed by them," Johnston said. "I watch their video. That's one of my training methods, just watching them and how they do it."

Johnston and Kelci Bryant finished second with 321.90 points, ending the country's diving medal drought that extended to the 2000 Sydney Games. It was the first Olympic synchro medal for the Americans.

"Our curse is out of the way," said Bryant, who finished fourth in springboard synchro with a different partner in Beijing.

"Abby and I just kicked it off with this event and I think the rest of the team is going to come through," she said. "After 2008, all of us were really close and we needed to fine-tune our training."

Laura Wilkinson's gold on 10-meter platform in Sydney, where she upset the Chinese despite a broken foot, was the last U.S. medal. The Americans were shut out for the first time ever four years later in Athens and again in Beijing.

"This is a new beginning," U.S. high performance director Steve Foley said. "We've got to forget the great USA diving history because really that was 20-plus years ago. It wasn't just 12 years ago when Laura won because they only got one medal, so the glory days were gone a long time ago."

After receiving their medals ? Bryant cried and Johnston smiled broadly on the podium ? Bryant reminded Johnston to hold up her prize as they posed for a gaggle of photographers on the deck.

US Air Force looks to train pilots for hi-tech threats

For over a decade US fighter pilots have become accustomed to "owning the sky" in wars against insurgents who have no air defenses, but now the air force is trying to get back to basics reminding pilots how to fly against a sophisticated enemy.

In the desert outside Las Vegas, the US Air Force is reminding pilots how to fly against an enemy with fighter jets, surface-to-air missiles and satellite jammers.

Traditional combat skills have gotten "a little rusty," said Steve Imonti, a former fighter pilot who helps oversee simulated air battles out of Nellis Air Force Base.

If a pilot goes three years or more without attending the "red flag" mock battles at Nellis, "then you see that rust really start to build up," said Imonti, director of programs and evaluation for the 414th Combat Training Squadron.

American pilots have become adept at precision air strikes in Iraq and Afghanistan, with a handful of planes circling over a single target after receiving a call for air power from troops on the ground.

With the United States withdrawing most of its combat troops from Afghanistan by the end of 2014, senior commanders are anxious for crews to train for operations other than close air support, officials said.

Military leaders want pilots from all the services to spend more time training for large-scale assaults in a "contested environment," where US air superiority is not a given and where batteries of anti-aircraft missiles pose a lethal threat.

"When we pull out of Afghanistan, we will have an increase here" at Nellis, said Colonel Chip Thompson, chief of the vast range just north of Las Vegas where the red flag exercises take place.

"The goal is, I want every lieutenant within his first two years to go to a red flag," he said, instead of the current average of about three years. "So that when you go to war, you've seen it before."

At red flag, pilots on a "blue team" face off against a hostile "red" fleet of fighters that employ tactics drawn from intelligence reports on Iran, China and other potential adversaries.

Instead of insurgents equipped with AK-47s and roadside bombs, the red team is well-armed, with an array of simulated surface-to-air missiles and the ability to jam radar, disrupt radio communications and disable computer networks at a command center.

Although officers insist the red side represents a generic enemy, the scenarios and targets often closely resemble real world armies, particularly Iran.

The red flag exercises started in 1975 after American pilots suffered heavy losses in Vietnam, where the "kill ratio" was 2:1, much worse than in previous conflicts.

Senior officers decided pilots needed more realistic training that would convey the intensity of aerial combat, as statistics showed if airmen could survive their first 10 sorties, their chances of survival dramatically improved.

"When you're flying around and you look over and see a smoke trail coming at you, it's OK to have your pucker factor as long as it occurs at red flag," said Lieutenant Colonel Brian Morrison, deputy commander of the 57th Adversary Tactics Group.

"So that when it actually happens in combat, you're saying, 'I've been there and done this,'" he said.

After the end of the Cold War, the red flag exercises were scaled back, and drills held at bases overseas were scrapped.

But the exercise got a new lease on life starting in 2005, with the Air Force adding mock surface-to-air missiles (SAM) and space and cyber warfare units.

At this month's red flag, young US pilots, along with crews from the United Arab Emirates and Colombia, woke every day to a briefing on a daunting new mission involving dozens of aircraft, including F-15 and F-16 fighters, B-1 and B-52 bombers, A-10 ground attack planes, aerial refueling tankers, unmanned drones and early warning radar aircraft.

In day and night time battles, they faced off against US pilots flying F-15 and F-16 fighter jets painted in camouflage resembling the patterns on Russian warplanes.

The red team pilots are part of dedicated "aggressor" squadrons that work full-time at emulating tactics of potential enemies, based on the latest intelligence analysis from spy agencies.

Commanders are also increasingly adding simulated underground targets to red flag scenarios, officials said, training pilots on techniques that might be required if the United States moves to take out buried nuclear sites in North Korea or Iran.

"Underground targets are becoming more of a factor, especially with Iran, North Korea scenarios," Thompson said. "These are very hard to find, hard to destroy."

Why is this practice so effective and fantastic? Here are the 3 advantages of obtaining repossessed cars from auctions.

1. Price ? This really is the ultimate consideration in getting these vehicles. You are able to get as significantly as half-off from auctions. SUV?s can go for as low as 50-70 percent from their original cost. Other luxury sedans can go for as low because the exact same. Advertised costs can also get much lower depending on bidder interest.

2. Automobile Condition ? It really is true, the majority of the time, the vehicles which are sold by means of repo auto auctions are in tip-top shape. As mentioned beforehand, most automobiles are repossessed because of the inability of its preceding owners to spend for their auto loans. Also, most necessary repairs are only superficial in nature, which in no way can hamper the performance on the car or truck.

3. Convenience ? With the advent of technologies, buying cars from auctions have come to be a lot much easier. You can obtain one particular by means of a web based auto auction, wherein you are able to purchase that ?expensive? dream automobile of yours in the comforts of one?s personal home.

If you want to attempt your hand at repossessed car auctions, act now and do not miss this special chance. Should you believe on the net motorcar auctions are considerably diverse from neighborhood auction, feel once again. As a matter of reality, on-line car auctions function exactly the same way as local ones. The only factor that distinguishes them from one another is the fact that you can?t inspect the auto prior to you acquire it at a web-based auction, if its location is outside your area. Be aware on the other hand, that each of the info you will need in regards to the automobile is offered up front and you happen to be also given access to detailed photographs of your vehicles.

WATCH: Is Real Estate Still A Good Investment? From Maria Bartiromo

When Maria Bartiromo, financial expert and anchor of CNBC's "Closing Bell" met with me on Mondays With Marlo, she answered a question that many of us have been wondering - is real estate still a good investment?

If you'd like more financial knowledge and advice on how to make your money grow, check out Maria's advice:

  • Scams

To avoid getting ripped-off, follow this one simple rule: if it looks too good to be true, it probably is. Don't expect overnight riches; invest for the long-term.

  • Money Buckets

There are three places you should put your money: a savings account for emergencies, a 401(k), for retirement, and a "mad money" bucket, for treats.

  • Protect Your Money

Interest rates on saving accounts are hardly keeping pace with inflation these days. A good alternative is to invest your money in dividend-paying stocks. Some deliver returns of between 4% and 7%, including dividend-paying ETFs.

  • Jobs Of The Future

Nothing is growing as fast as data, so any job in technology is a job of the future. As we're all living longer and struggling with problems of obesity, and such, health care is another top field for jobs.

  • Credit Cards

We all know how easy it is to fall into a debt trap with credit cards. Only use a credit card if you can pay more than the minimum each month. Ideally, you'd pay off the balance each billing cycle. American Express, for example, requires you to pay it all back in one shot.

  • Take Risks

Think outside the box; you never know where it'll lead. It could be the biggest mistake of your life, or a great career move. If it doesn't work, you can always brush yourself off and start over again.

  • Selling Your Home

Put your house on the market and see what kind of numbers you get. Don't try to time the market. Be realistic; it's not the worst part of the crisis, but we probably have at least two more years for the housing sector to recover.

  • Picking Investments

Don't get distracted by hype. Instead, look at company fundamentals: revenue growth, earnings growth, the management team, insider ownership, and the company's product. Ask yourself: will this product be in demand in the coming years?

  • Retirement

We're living longer, so we need to keep our minds going past retirement age. Stay active and keep working!

  • When To Start A 401(k)

Start a 401(k) in your 20s. It'll have more time grow, and you'll have a nice nest egg at retirement. If your company doesn't do matching, open an IRA on your own through any brokerage service.

A fellow friend just opened up her own yoga studio so I went there to check it out when I was in Singapore recently.

Hot yoga is great for detox and overall rejuvenation! I usually do a 10-minute basic yoga exercise in the morning to start the day. Besides that, I try to go for hot yoga class at least once a week, combined with 3 days of resistance training and 2 days of light cardio workout when I can.

Yoga Movement is conveniently located right opposite Central mall (Clarke Quay station). Across the road from Cheers.

Cute poster! I sweat like beast in the hot yoga room so a big bottle of Evian is my all-time BFF at every session.

I was pleasantly surprised when Alicia played music from Massive Attack during our hot yoga class!

That was actually the first time I ever did yoga with music playing in the background and it was indeed a pleasant experience. Very relaxing and definitely set the mood. Her selections from Massive Attack was a great choice.

Hey, count me in for next year's Summer Solstice Practice (it's a 'Once A Year' thing...)!

Katherine Jackson returns home amid family feud rumors | theGrio

Katherine?Jackson is apparently back?home, reuniting with Michael Jackson?s children after a judge temporarily took away her guardianship because of her days-long absence from them.

Paris Jackson tweeted early Thursday morning: ?grandma?s here! (hash)thankyougod.? Katherine?Jackson?s son Marlon also posted a note on Twitter saying his mother had returned, adding she looked and sound great.

On Wednesday, judge removed her as guardian temporarily and named her grandson Tito Joe ?TJ? Jackson as temporary caretaker of the late legend?s three minor children amid a bitter family dispute over Michael Jackson?s estate.

Superior Court Judge Mitchell Beckloff issued the ruling because she was in Arizona and hadn?t spoken with the children in several days. TJ Jackson now has the ability to control the hilltop home where the children live and to take on other supervision duties.

Katherine?Jackson told ABC News that the court ruling was ?based on a bunch of lies.?

?I am devastated that while I?ve been away, that my children, my grandchildren, have been taken away from me, and I?m coming home to see about that, also,? she said reading from a prepared statement.

She denied the suggestion made in court and in court filings to support TJ Jackson?s appointment that she was being held against her will.

?I am here today to let everybody know that I am fine and I am here with my children, and my children would never do a thing to me like that, holding me against my will,? she said while her children Randy, Janet and Rebbie were seated next to her. ?It?s very stupid for people to think that.?

But on Thursday, Michael Jackson?s son Prince posted a photo of what he said was a group text message involving Rebbie and Janet in which he demanded to contact with his grandmother and Janet allegedly responded: ?Please don?t let them.?

?As long as I can remember my dad repeatedly warned me of certain people and their ways,? Prince Michael tweeted. ?Although I am happy my grandma was returned, after speaking with her I realize how misguided and how badly she was lied to. I ?m really angry and hurt.?

Beckloff said there was no evidence that Katherine?Jackson had done anything wrong but instead it appeared she was being prevented from fulfilling her role as guardian through the ?intentional acts of third parties.? He didn?t elaborate but made the decision after reading court filings in which TJ Jackson expressed concern that Katherine?Jackson was being prevented from returning.

He cited a Monday incident in which Janet, Randy and Jermaine Jackson arrived at the children?s home and told them they could speak with their grandmother but had to leave with them.

?This was odd and disturbing to me and (the children) and heightened our concern that our grandmother was being prohibited from returning home,? TJ Jackson wrote in a sworn statement. The incident turned into a confrontation between two male adults at the house and sheriff?s officials say it remains an ongoing battery investigation.

Beckloff listened as attorneys described Katherine?Jackson?s demeanor as unusual on phone calls placed to the children hours before the hearing.

TJ Jackson?s attorney Charles Shultz also revealed in court filings that the children were forced to miss school Wednesday because of concerns about their security.

Beckloff ruled the Jackson children could not leave California without court approval.

Katherine?Jackson?s attorney Perry Sanders Jr. said after the hearing that he spoke with his client as she was driving back to Los Angeles from Tucson, Ariz., where she had been since July 15.

?She sounded absolutely fine, lucid and her normal self,? he said.

Sanders plans to ask the court to reinstate Katherine?Jackson as guardian of the children when she is back in Los Angeles. He was looking forward to meeting with her in person on Thursday.

The public battle was revealed early Sunday after a relative reported Katherine?Jackson missing, but she was later located safely with other family members in Arizona.

Jermaine Jackson has said his mother was following doctor?s orders to cut off communications with the children, who range in age from 10 to 15. He didn?t provide further details.

In addition to concerns about the safety of Jackson?s children, some of Michael Jackson?s siblings have recently called on the executors of his estate to resign.

Randy Jackson appeared Tuesday on Al Sharpton?s MSNBC show PoliticsNation and said he believes his brother?s will is a fake and that the executors have engaged in criminal activity.

The estate, which recently reported it saw $475 million in gross earnings since Jackson?s death in June 2009, has denied wrongdoing and called the accusations ?false and defamatory.?

Beckloff, who also oversees financial issues affecting Jackson?s estate, was initially reluctant to appoint a temporary guardian but changed his mind after hearing from several attorneys who expressed concern about the family?s problems.

He made the ruling after hearing TJ Jackson?s description of a ?strange? conversation he had with Katherine?Jackson on Tuesday evening.

?I?ve never heard my grandmother talk like that,? he said reluctantly. ?In every way. The sound in her voice. The pauses.?

He said some of her speech sounded slurred and she used words that made him wonder if she was speaking in code.

Her son Marlon echoed those concerns on Twitter, complaining that siblings Janet, Randy and Jermaine were keeping her from him.

The children?s guardian ad litem, Margaret Lodise, said she spoke with the children and the two oldest, Prince and Paris, supported the appointment of a temporary guardian. Lodise did not ask the youngest son, 10-year-old Blanket, for his views.

Lodise is responsible for overseeing the children?s interests in the estate of their father.

Schultz said TJ Jackson didn?t want to replace Katherine?Jackson as permanent guardian. Still, the judge noted that TJ Jackson would have to petition to become the permanent guardian within 48 hours and added that such a petition might not be heard if Katherine?Jackson re-emerges.

Sanders said he would fight any move to have her permanently replaced.

He said he met with Randy and Janet Jackson in Tucson, Ariz., on Tuesday, but he was not allowed to see his client. He said he still hoped the recent events were a misunderstanding, but he described them as ?chaos.?

Comcast Offers $300 A Month Super-Fast Internet ... - Yahoo! Finance

Follow The Daily Ticker on Facebook!

All Internet consumers have grumbled from time to time about their Internet connection. The average Internet user pays less than $55 per month for at least 15 megabits per second of data ? not the quickest rate available on the market but a decent-enough one to download videos, songs and photos.

But just how much would one pay for lightening speed Internet access?

For those who 'feel the need for speed' (a fitting reference here from "Top Guns") Comcast (CMCSA) will soon debut its Xfinity Platinum Internet service that boasts a 305 megabits per second download speed ? arguably one of the fastest in the world. But consumers will have to pay up for the latest technology. Comcast charges $299.95 per month for Xfinity Platinum, nearly a six-fold premium to the national average.

Tuna Amobi, an analyst at S&P Capital IQ, says Comcast's ultra high-speed gamble was designed for a very small segment of the market but more importantly to establish the company's prowess in the increasingly competitive Internet space.

"What we're seeing in the broadband wars is increasingly played out on the speed front so you've got telecoms on the one side and cable industry on the other side," Amobi says in the accompanying video. "This has probably been positioned as a defensive weapon and potentially for bragging rights as well so cable guys can now say we can offer speeds that match or exceed the fiber based broadband. It's important for their marketing efforts."

Consumers get their Internet service from their telephone company, such as Verizon (VZ), or their cable company, like Comcast or Time Warner (TWX). The cost of a consumer's Internet plan depends on location and connection speed, and the price is usually bundled in a "triple-play" package that includes cable and voice services. Verizon launched its high-speed Internet plan last month for its FiOS customers. The plan offers 300 megabits for $205 a month with a two-year agreement ? $100 and five megabits less per month than Comcast's service.

As of August 2011, 78 percent of U.S. adults and 95 percent of U.S. teenagers surfed the Internet according to the Pew Research Center. A new Federal Communications Commission report found that the average broadband Internet provider met 96 percent of advertised download speeds last year, up from 87 percent in 2010. Peak download times are between 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Amobi says consumers already pay more for the available 50 megabits deluxe Internet package and it will be a "quantum leap" for consumers to upgrade their existing plans.

"Most consumers feel very satisfied with the standard offerings out there," he says. "It's going to be very very tough to sell in this economic environment. Having said that there will always be a very small constituency of consumers that are always going to need the highest speeds out there but frankly at a point you can barely tell the difference."

Amobi predicts that Time Warner Cable will soon follow Comcast's lead in offering a super-charged Internet connection.

"Comcast has shown that the technology is in place to offer such speeds," he adds. "For Time Warner it's a question of when not if."

Software outsourcers fight for human resources | SaigonMoney.com ...

The fierce competition for skilled labor between software outsourcers has led to a rising trend of job hopping in this industry.
Chu Tien Dung, chairman of the HCMC Computer Association, told the Daily that the job-hopping ratio in the software outsourcing sector has surged by nearly 20% as industry players are grabbing their rivals? employees given a labor undersupply.

These companies prefer experienced people, Dung said. Certain firms have even committed an act of unhealthy competition. The bottom line is many companies put quick profits first but lack long-term investment in human resource development.

The demand for information technology (IT) specialists has far exceeded the supply. As a result, enterprises are facing constant job-hopping and sharp rises in wages.

The increasingly high specialization of software outsourcing and continuous personnel changes have sent the market shrinking as enterprises do not employ people who are trained from scratch but experienced ones.

Vuong Bao Long, human resource manager of LogiGear Vietnam, specializing in software testing, said LogiGear had been hurt in the fierce battle for staff. He stressed other software companies had sent emails to engineers of his company and offered attractive salaries.

?Many companies will, at all costs, hunt for experienced people when they have projects. But they will terminate their labor contracts when the projects are done. There are certain companies having proposed transferring their employees to other firms. This leaves an adverse impact on the labor market,? Long said.

Other software outsourcing companies like CSC, Global CyberSoft and TMA are also struggling with this pressing issue. They said the unhealthy competition was initiated by some foreign-invested and local newly-established companies, but they declined to reveal the names of those firms.

Under the pressure caused by the fight for human resources, multiple companies have offered their employees higher salaries, a better working environment and opportunities for promotion. In addition, software outsourcers have joined hands with the HCMC-based colleges to boost the number and the quality of IT students to create a more stable labor supply.

However, Long said these measures could only help remove the tip of the iceberg. He proposed the authorities should intervene to remedy this situation.

Preserving Heritage: Healing the family history

When I do genealogy research, whether it is for my own family, a friend or a client, I like to look at every possible bit of information.
One of the ones that are usually overlooked, is the information on the health condition of a person.
This is one of the family history data that can bring a descendant closer to his/her ancestors and can benefit the whole family in so many ways...

As an example, when I was doing research for this client/friend, I found out that one of her ancestors couldn't go to the town hall because of a very bad case of arthritis, so the mayor had to go to her house to officiate the wedding. When I presented my client with this piece of information, she was amazed at how this health condition had been passed down the family tree, since both she and her mom suffer from arthritis. Even if not a happy thing, knowing about her ancestor's health condition brought her closer to this particular relative.

Have you ever looked at your family history from a health point of view?
Do you know how your great grandma died? Do you know your family health history?
Would that be important for you to know? Would this info help you heal your family history?

I am surely trying to heal mine.?
Let me tell you how and why.

My family health history is pretty complex. Looking at it, I feel like my chances of having a life threatening disease is very high, and when I couple my family health history with my husband's, I really feel the need to protect my children from the ?list of health conditions that has affected our ancestors that could be genetic, or family tradition?related.

We all know about genetics, so let me explain how a condition could be family tradition related with another example.
I remember when I was little, my mom used to slather these bread slices with lard and then fry it in a pan, making some kind of "piadina". To us it was the most delicious thing on earth, but let's face it, it was not the?healthiest?option for little kids. Thing is, she learned this from her mom, who probably learned it from her mom; especially during time of war, this was something "special" that they used to make. My grandma died of stomach cancer. I was only 12 when I watched her suffer so much, and I heard her last words: "Look what I have become".
This was the first time (that I remember) that I was faced with a death in the family, and to make it worse, she was the only grandma I knew, since my dad's mom had died before I was born.
I remember, beside the pain of losing my dear grandma, the fear of the possibility that I would have to suffer and die like that. I was still young, so I did not know a lot about cancer, beside the fact that it could be genetic. Thinking about the diet rich in animal fats my grandma used to eat, I now feel that I could have experienced the joy of having my children listen to their "bisnonna" Michelina's stories if she had known how she could have prevented or at least lived longer through such a disease by watching her diet, and possibly looking into some natural remedies.
Her husband died 6 years later, he had been suffering of senile Dementia and it was really sad for me to see him going down hill... With the knowledge of today, I could have helped by having him try some coconut oil in his food, to help "nourish" his brain, and more than likely with some changes in his diet, he could have been sharper till the end.
On my father's side, my granddad died of colon cancer. I know very little about his diet, but I know that he worked in a tobacco factory. More than likely it was the exposure to such highly cancerous substances that caused his illness, and death. You can be sure that I keep my kids away from any tobacco product.
My dad's mom died of childbirth, together with her little one. I know very little about her condition, but since she had already given birth to 5 children,? I wonder what could have been the reason for her death... At the same time, this has brought me to be very health conscious (even more than usual) during each of my pregnancies.
My dad died when I was 13. He had 2 heart attacks while doing one of his dialysis sessions.
We used to joke that the list of his health conditions was much longer than a grocery list for a big family.
He was diagnosed with diabetes when he was young, but he didn't take any medicine for it, nor did he really triy to check his diet. By the time I was born, my dad's health was going down hill. He still had diabetes,?but was checking his diet by ?having sugar free, whole grain meals, and?was ?taking medicine for it, but these medicines had countless side effects. ?He also had ?arteriosclerosis, myocarditis, arthritis, and had to have laser surgery since he was going blind. ?Additionally, he had bronchial asthma and ended up in kidney failure by the time I was a teenager, thus the dialysis since he was not eligible for a kidney transplant because of his diabetes. Each of the medicines he was taking for these conditions brought?up lots of side effect, so he had to take more medicines to limit them.
My memories of my dad are of the many times I would go visit him in the hospital, the times he would put an IV in his arms by himself, hanging it on the dining room lamp, while we were doing homework right by his side, and the last memories are of him in his warm jacket sitting by the wood stove most of the time because he was always cold...
?I ?do have happier memories, like his being very proud of our school achievement, and always defending our right to education over everything else, but his health really limited his ability to play with us and do anything that required energy and?strength.
He was a very strong person, both physically and emotionally, but all these illnesses took a lot from him.
I have also been wondering where the diabetes came from in my dad's family tree, since all of his siblings were diagnosed with it also. My thought is that it came from someone further back in time.? Talking with a long lost cousin on my dad's side, I discovered that her mom died of child birth, from complications due to diabetes. Could diabetes have been the cause for my grandma's death too, since they descended from the same family tree? I wish I had more info, but for now, this is a plausible?hypothesis. As a prevention, I do watch my kid's sugar intake, and offer them whole grains most of the times we have bread or pasta at our table.
My mom suffers from?bipolar?disease, not sure where in her family tree this came from, but since my cousin is bipolar also, my brother suffers from depression, my sister has suffered from post partum depression, and probably I did too (was never diagnosed though), it must come from someone up in the family tree. The only info I have is from word of mouth, since many in my family say that my ?great grandma Margherita (nonna Michelina's mom) killed her self jumping from a balcony from this mental facility, where she was put because she tried to kill her husband when she caught him cheating on her. Whether this story is true or not, I do know that there is mental struggling in my family history, so this is another concern for me and my children.
Because of her smoking habit, my mom has struggled all of her life with asthma, episodes of bronchitis, and ended up with an?emphysema, which never improved because she keeps wanting to smoke. She also suffer from arthritis.
Because of all the medications she is taking for the other illnesses, my mom has developed diabetes, high blood pressure and kidney problems.
I have had quite a few health problems myself in my "short" 40 years of life on this earth (hoping to at least double them - the years, not the health problems :)).
I believe that some were genetic, some due to family habits and tradition, some due to prescription drug side effects and some plain environmental.
I was diagnosed with?rheumatism?at age 6. Back then people knew very little about children's?rheumatism, and I remember being made fun of by my school friends because they believed I was lying about my condition, and how it hurt to sit on the hard chair in my class after all those?penicillin?shots I had to have for weeks if not months. To limit the side effects of penicillin, I would be given high doses of vitamin B, but I think that ?was not sufficient, because I ended up not growing as tall as my sister or brother, I have been facing periods of anemia during my whole life, and experienced many other side effects.
Later in life I have been dealing ?with respiratory problems, like asthma and?chronic?bronchitis, first because of my mom's smoking habit which exposed me to second hand smoke, then I experienced even worse asthma attacks ?after a round of steroids shots I had to have because of a highly painful neck and shoulders condition which kept me out of school for a year.
I have had?tachycardia?and also suffered from ulcers and reflux in my college years. I was vegetarian, didn't smoke nor drink coffee or alchool, my only weakness was chocolate, so the doctors were very surprised I had all those health problems. Their only thought was that stress was a definite factor, together with the pain killers and the?steroids?I had to take for such a long time in the past. It goes without saying that I have stayed away from pain killers and steroids since! I was doing all I could to the best of my knowledge to eat?healthy?and?exercise, but the effect of the many prescription drugs I had to take were very difficult to overcome.
It was also possible that I was dealing with the side effects of whatever OTC or prescription drugs my mom was taking when she got pregnant with me, since I was not planned, and she always smoked, and she did like to drink wine and other alcohol drinks.
By the end of my 20s, I was going to the hospital every 6 months to try and fix stomach, heart and other problems that kept coming. Every time I was prescribed new drugs, and the only ones I would say no to were painkillers and steroids.

Once I came to America and married the love of my life, I knew I wanted to give my children the best chances possible at having a healthy start in life, so I decided to stop taking the few medications I was still taking for my stomach because one of their side effects is birth defects.
I also learned about high fructose corn syrup and hydrogenated fats and stayed away from them. We gradually took soda out of our home and introduced even more vegetable and fruit in our diet.
While I had lots of pain from my back because of a degenerating condition in my spine that would get worse with the progressing pregnancy, I did not have any ulcer or related symptoms during each pregnancy, besides the occasional heartburn or nausea.
I never took pain killers, and took as little prescription drugs as possible for a couple very bad asthma attacks.
Besides my first child for whom I ended up having to give birth in the hospital because after 24 hours from my water breaking I was not having real contraction, and was given drugs even if I did not really want them to, my children were all as healthy as they could be when they were born (naturally, with no drugs!), and I have worked hard to help them avoid or at least postpone as much as possible, any of the illnesses in their family history. My first born child has had behavioral issues, and I can't help but think that the drugs I was given might have had a part in this.

I am not going to analyze my husband's family history in detail, it should?suffice?to say that his "family health?heirlooms" include diabetes, high blood pressure, cholesterol, sleep apnea,?Alzheimer, stroke, skin cancer,?periodontal?disease, kidney disease and more, so you bet I am constantly searching for ways to heal our family history, and with all the experience I have had with conventional drugs side effects, I am continually looking for a more natural approach to healthcare.

I do realize that my natural approach is something that also comes from my immediate family history. One of the reasons my dad did not take medicine for his diabetes in the beginning was that he thought he would be able to take care of himself. I still remember the many books in our house talking about healing with herbs, studying the human body, and much more. I think he was on the right path, just did not have enough information to completely heal himself naturally. Nowadays, I not only have many more books I can read, but also a huge source as the internet and many more natural healing experts and practitioners to ask counsel to than my dad ever had.

I have been searching even more after last January, when both my husband and I ended up in the hospital for a surgical procedures within 8 days from each other. I had shoulder surgery, he had to have a stent placement to save him from a heart attack due to a clogged artery. We later discovered that he had kidney problems that would only get worse, and each and every prescription he has to take will just speed up the process.
For a moment I felt like I was living my mom's life, and I got a greater understanding of all the suffering she went through both while my dad was still alive, but sick, and after we lost him.
Thankfully, my husband is still alive, and I am doing all I can to keep him with us :)

My research has brought me to discover the benefits of essential oils?, and we have started using them on a daily bases for our family.

They have helped me recover from my surgery and gain the use of my shoulder back. They have helped take care of seasonal illnesses and allergies, and keep us healthy when there were viruses going around.
I find myself wondering how using essential oils could have changed my family's health history, especially fantasizing to be able to meet my grandparents on my father's side. Could they have lived longer? Would their quality of life be better?
While I cannot go back in the past, I surely can learn from the past.
Knowing my family health history helps me learn what the illnesses are that we are genetically predisposed to, and knowing the environment and family traditions of my family also help me get a better picture.
For example, my?rheumatism?could have been due to living in a cold and humid environment, also, since I remember a good bunch of baby bottles in my home, it is possible that my mom did not nurse me for long time (she wouldn't tell me, and even if she did, sadly it is pretty difficult to get much truth from her anyways...)
Bronchitis and asthma were exacerbated from being around smokers, but also around a not so well ventilated fireplace, or just in a room with the heat turned on.?
I have learned that most times taking care of pain is not really worth the many side effects of a drug, and there are many natural alternatives to conventional medicine.
With this piece of information, I know I need to keep my kids away from humidity and at the same time to limit the heating in our home especially at night. We prefer to use extra blankets.
I have nursed all my kids until they were 15-18 months old, which should have strengthened?their immune system. They don't get sick so often, and when they do, I now use essential oils to help them overcome their illness, thus avoiding undesirable side effects.

I know there are things that even with all my efforts my children will still have to deal with, but I feel confident I am giving them the best chance and the best tools I know to face and possibly overcome any health issue that they may encounter in the future.
I not only love to preserve our heritage, but our health also. I will always do all I can to preserve and heal our family history.

No matter how you feel about healthcare and natural remedies, knowing your family health history can be a great help in preserving your health and that of your loved ones.
If you don't know much about the health issues in your family, I encourage you to do your research. Start by asking your parents, their siblings, your grandparents. You will not only add pages to your family history, but will be on your way to a better health.

Expanding Medicaid to low-income adults leads to improved health, fewer deaths

Thursday, July 26, 2012

A new study from Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) finds that expanding Medicaid to low-income adults leads to widespread gains in coverage, access to care, and?most importantly?improved health and reduced mortality. It is the first published study to look specifically at the effect of recent state Medicaid expansions on mortality among low-income adults, and the findings suggest that expanding coverage to the uninsured may save lives.

"The recent Supreme Court decision on the Affordable Care Act ruled that states could decide whether or not they wanted to participate in the health care law's Medicaid expansion. Our study provides evidence suggesting that expanding Medicaid has a major positive effect on people's health," said Benjamin Sommers, assistant professor of health policy and economics at HSPH and the study's lead author.

The study will be published online July 25, 2012 and will appear in the September 13, 2012 print issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

In the past decade, several states expanded Medicaid from its traditional coverage of low-income children, parents, pregnant women, and disabled persons to include "childless adults," poor adults without any children living at home and the population most directly targeted by the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Medicaid currently covers 60 million people, and the ACA will extend eligibility to millions more beginning in 2014. However, the Supreme Court decision gives states the option of choosing whether or not to expand coverage and, because of budget pressures, some states are considering cutbacks, not expansion.

The HSPH researchers, including senior author Arnold Epstein, chair of the Department of Health Policy and Management, and Katherine Baicker, professor of health economics, analyzed data from three states?Arizona, Maine, and New York?that had expanded their Medicaid programs to childless adults (aged 20-64) between 2000 and 2005. They selected four neighboring states without major Medicaid expansions?New Hampshire (for Maine), Pennsylvania (for New York), and Nevada and New Mexico (for Arizona)?as controls. The researchers analyzed data from five years before and after each state's expansion.

The results showed that Medicaid expansions in three states were associated with a significant reduction in mortality of 6.1% compared with neighboring states that did not expand Medicaid, which corresponds to 2,840 deaths prevented per year for each 500,000 adults gaining Medicaid coverage. Mortality reductions were greatest among older adults, non-whites, and residents of poorer counties. Expansions also were associated with increased Medicaid coverage, decreased uninsurance, decreased rates of deferring care due to costs, and increased rates of "excellent" or "very good" self-reported health.

The groups that benefitted from Medicaid expansion in this study?older adults, racial and ethnic minorities, and those living in poor areas?are groups that have traditionally had higher mortality rates and faced greater barriers to care. The study results provide valuable evidence for state policymakers deciding whether or not to expand Medicaid, say the authors.

"Sometimes the political rhetoric is at odds with the evidence, such as claims that Medicaid is a 'broken program' or worse than no insurance at all; our findings suggest precisely the opposite," said Epstein.

Fed has few options as global growth slows

By John W. Schoen, Senior Producer

For the first time in decades, the U.S. Federal Reserve is looking like a toothless tiger.

As it becomes clearer that the multiple gears of the worldwide economy are slowing in unison, pressure is mounting on the world's largest central bank to spur growth.?But with the cost of borrowing money already at historic lows, it?s far from clear whether further measures aimed at making money cheaper will help.

"They have a hammer and they're looking for a nail," Alan De Rose, managing director of government trading and finance at Oppenheimer, told Reuters.

With businesses worried about taking on new risk and households struggling to make ends meet, fresh data this week point to an ongoing economic slowdown in the U.S.

The Commerce Department?s initial estimate of second quarter gross domestic product, due Thursday, is expected to show the growth rate slowed to 1.2 percent from 1.9 percent in the first three months of the year. The slowdown follows a series of monthly reports pointing to a weakening job market and stubbornly high unemployment rate.

American businesses continue to feel the impact of a deepening recession in Europe. Surveys of Europe's private sector this week showed that the contraction that began in the eurozone's weaker economies has now spread to Germany and France. ?Across the 17 countries that use the euro, manufacturing output has tanked. Consumers are gloomier than they've been since 2009.

As the European meltdown weighs on the overall U.S. economy, states that rely heavily on exports ?are most at risk from the deepening crisis overseas.

When the global credit markets collapsed in the fall of 2008, central banks around the world quickly exhausted the primary tool they?ve reliably used to fight financial fires for decades: slashing the interest rates on money lent directly to banks. Despite those efforts, the world economy slid into a nasty recession.

Since then, the Fed has employed a set of new tools, including the purchase of some $2 trillion in bonds to lower rates on other forms of credit, including home mortgages. For a time, those moves seemed to revive growth: gross domestic product and hiring picked up last year, and the housing market appears to have stabilized.

Despite a flurry of leaked press reports of possible new moves, the Fed is not expected to make any fresh announcements before its next two-day policy meeting next week. Even then, most of the measures under consideration have already been tried.

Buying more bonds could help prop up the financial markets, but would do little to spur borrowing and lending.?With interest rates at or near record lows, extending the promise to provide ultra-low rates beyond 2014, by itself, isn?t likely to encourage businesses and consumers to take on more risk.

So, with global economy slowing, the Fed is reaching deeper into its toolbox.

With borrowers on the sidelines, Fed policy makers are considering measures to try to prod bankers to push more money into the system. One such move would be to reward banks that make more loans, an idea borrowed from a recent program launched by the Bank of England. Bernanke hinted to reporters in June that the Fed was considering the plan. Another measure aimed at prodding bankers to move more money out of their vaults and back into the economy would involve cut the interest rate the Fed pays financial institutions to park their cash reserves with the central bank, which now stands at 0.25 percent.

But no matter how many creative new moves they try, Fed chairman Ben Bernanke has conceded that the impact of these policies will be limited. As he warned lawmakers last week, the central bank faces major obstacles to its mission of promoting strong growth and steady prices that are beyond its control.

"The recovery in the United States continues to be held back by a number of other headwinds, including still-tight borrowing conditions for some businesses and households, and the restraining effects of fiscal policy and fiscal uncertainty," Bernanke told a Senate panel.

Translation: Companies and consumers are still having a hard time qualifying for loans. And unless Congress and the White House head off the looming ?fiscal cliff? off massive tax increases and spending cuts, there is little the central bank can do to stave off another recession.

The Fed isn?t alone in its current predicament.

With the world now locked in what appears to be a coordinated slowdown, central banks around the world have been flooding the system with money to prod businesses and consumers to borrow and spend.

But the global economy continues to lose momentum. The slowdown is most pronounced in Europe, where a deepening debt crisis is weighing on business and consumer confidence and hammering the banking system.

Like their American counterparts, European central bankers are struggling to push money into the economy.? But deep government spending cuts in Greece and Spain have left many households without a paycheck to spend.?And in the midst of a debt-induced a financial storm, business and consumers across the continent are in no mood to borrow. A closely watched European Central Bank survey Wednesday showed that demand for credit remains weak in the euro zone.

In China, the last major economy showing strong growth, that forward momentum is also slowing. Though still booming compared to developed economies, Chinese officials are trying to steer their emerging economy on a course that maintains robust growth but avoids a ruinous run-up in prices.

After adopting measures last year to cool an emerging price bubble, Beijing is now moving to boost growth again. But those measures are expected to be too limited to help revive the rest of the global economy. ?
