In the face of rapid changes in Earth's biota, understanding the evolutionary processes that drive patterns of species diversity and coexistence in ecosystems has never been more pressing, write co-editors Jeannine Cavender-Bares of the University of Minnesota, David Ackerly of the University of California at Berkeley and Kenneth Kozak of the University of Minnesota.

"As human domination of our planet accelerates," says Cavender-Bares, "our best hope for restoring and sustaining the 'environmental services' of the biological world is to understand how organisms assemble, persist and coexist in ecosystems across the globe."

Papers in the volume address subjects such as the vanishingly rare oak savanna ecosystem of U.S. northern tier states, revealing an ancient footprint of history on the savanna as well as how it has fared in a 40-year fire experiment.

Other results cover the influence of ecological and evolutionary factors on hummingbird populations; habitat specialization in willow tree communities; growth strategies in tropical tree lineages and their implications for biodiversity in the Amazon region; and the characteristics of common urban plants.

"The studies in this issue show that knowledge of how organisms evolve reveals new insights into the ecology and persistence of species," says Cavender-Bares.

Plants in urban yards, for example, are more closely related to each other--and live shorter lives--than do plants in rural areas, found Cavender-Bares and colleagues.

Their study compared plant diversity in private urban yards in the U.S. Midwest with that in the rural NSF Cedar Creek Long-Term Ecological Research site in Minnesota.

Cities are growing faster and faster, with unexpected effects, says Sonja Knapp of the Hemholtz Center for Environmental Research in Germany, lead author of the paper reporting the results.

"Understanding how urban gardening affects biodiversity is increasingly important," says Cavender-Bares. "Urbanites should consider maintaining yards with a higher number of species."

In the special issue, researchers also look at topics such as what determines the number of coexisting species in local and regional communities of salamanders. Kenneth Kozak of the University of Minnesota and John Wiens of Stony Brook University report that variation in the amount of time salamanders occupy different climate zones is the primary factor.

Evolution of an herbaceous flower called goldfields, and how that led to the plant's affinity for certain habitats, is the subject of a paper by David Ackerly, Nancy Emery of Purdue University and colleagues. Emery is the paper's lead author.

In all, 17 papers combine ecology and phylogenetics to offer new answers to long-standing questions about the patterns and processes of biodiversity on Planet Earth.

Dylan DiFalco told a Sheriff's deputy he had to urinate and, when the cop told him he'd have to wait, he peed in the cop car, according to an arrest report. "I told you I had to go you stupid cop," Difalco said, according to the report.

BNP Paribas beats rivals to hit capital target early

PARIS (Reuters) - BNP Paribas , one of Europe's biggest banks, has hit a target to strengthen its capital base six months early, beating many rivals as it strives to reassure investors worried about its exposure to the region's debt crisis.

The move, which puts the French bank well ahead of domestic rival Societe Generale and in the top tier of banks across Europe, came as BNP posted a smaller-than-expected fall in quarterly profit, helped by tight cost control, asset sales and lower provisions for loan losses.

BNP shares, which often trade as a proxy for the euro zone, fell more than rivals after the European Central Bank disappointed markets hoping for action on the debt crisis on Thursday. The ECB statement came after BNP reported second-quarter results.

Analysts said the fortunes of BNP, France's biggest listed bank, were heavily dependent on the European economy. "We still see good value in a European context," said Nomura analyst Jon Peace. "That said, we expect French banks to remain highly leveraged to euro zone macro developments."

At 11:45 a.m. EDT (1545 GMT), BNP shares were down 4.1 percent at 29.45 euros, more than the 2.8 percent decline in the STOXX 600 Europe bank index <.sx7p>.

The debt problems and weak economy have hit banks across Europe, with lenders including Deutsche Bank , Switzerland's UBS and Spain's BBVA as well as SocGen reporting dismal second-quarter earnings.

As at rivals, BNP's corporate and investment bank bore the brunt of cost cuts and volatile markets, with pretax profit sinking 40 percent and revenue down by a quarter.

Banks have been selling assets, slashing jobs and cutting dividends to bolster their balance sheets and meet tougher regulations aimed at preventing a repeat of the 2008 financial markets crisis.

BNP said on Thursday it had achieved a Tier 1 capital ratio of 8.9 percent under industry-wide Basel III rules at the end of June - some six months ahead of schedule.

By contrast, SocGen is eyeing a Basel III ratio of at least 9 percent only by the end of next year.

"This is evidence of the quality of the bank's fundamentals and gives management considerable room for maneuver in a still-tough market context," Natixis analyst Alex Koagne said of BNP.

"(It is) one of the very few banks to achieve such a feat."

Analysts said BNP had benefited from its strength in retail banking, which has been more resistant to volatile financial markets than investment banking, as well as cost-cutting and a knack of selling assets at acceptable prices.

DIVIDEND FLEXIBILITY

The strengthened balance sheet also offers flexibility on dividend policy, Chief Operating Officer Philippe Bordenave told analysts on a conference call, saying the bank might not need to rely on offering shares instead of cash to investors to save money.

"We are very confident for the second part of the year," BNP Chief Executive Jean-Laurent Bonnafe told Reuters Insider television.

Analysts want to know whether BNP will decide to sell its U.S. retail subsidiary BancWest and what its plans are for operations in euro zone trouble-spot Italy. Bonnafe was a key player in acquiring and integrating BNP's Italian subsidiary BNL in 2006 and may buy bolt-on banks or branches to boost deposits.

Bonnafe told journalists BNP would grow via market-share gains and expanding in Asia, though he ruled out acquisitions for now because of the uncertain regulatory backdrop.

Asked if BNP was embroiled in the interest rate-fixing scandal that has engulfed more than a dozen rivals, Bonnafe said the bank was "absolutely not" involved.

Markets including France, Italy and Belgium are expected to show "resilience" in the second half, Bonnafe told Insider TV. BNP has benefited from relatively low household debt levels in these countries.

Second-quarter net income fell 13 percent to 1.85 billion euros ($2.3 billion), beating the 1.74 billion average of analysts' estimates in a Reuters poll.

Revenue dropped 8 percent to 10.10 billion euros, broadly in line with the poll average.

Retail banking, a division that has proven a lucrative counterweight to financial market turmoil, saw pretax earnings slip by just 2 percent.

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syrian President Bashar Assad urged his armed forces Wednesday to step up the fight against rebels as the U.N. reported a significant escalation in the civil war with the military using warplanes to fire on opposition fighters in the battle for Aleppo.

Sausan Ghosheh, the spokeswoman for the U.N. mission in Syria, said that international observers had witnessed warplanes firing in Syria's largest city, where intense fighting has been raging for 12 days. She said the situation in Aleppo was dire, with "heavy use of heavy weapons" including tanks, which the rebels now possess as well.

"Yesterday, for the first time, our observers saw firing from a fighter aircraft. We also now have confirmation that the opposition is in a position of having heavy weapons, including tanks," she said, adding that for civilians, there "is a shortage of food, fuel, water and gas."

Residents of Aleppo have told The Associated Press over the past week that jet fighters have been strafing rebel positions and there are numerous videos on the Internet posted by activists showing rebels commandeering regime tanks after conquering their bases.

Aleppo, a city of some 3 million, has been wracked by violence since rebels attempted to take it over and succeeded in holding several neighborhoods despite daily assaults by regime tanks, helicopters and warplanes.

On the 67th anniversary of the Syrian army's founding, Assad pushed his armed forces to redouble their efforts in the fight in a speech that was not televised but only appeared in the army's magazine and the state news agency.

"Today you are invited to increase your readiness and willingness for the armed forces to be the shield, wall and fortress of our nation," he said.

The regime has characterized the rebellion as the work of foreign terrorists, and Assad claimed "internal agents" are collaborating with them.

"Our battle is against a multi-faceted enemy with clear goals. This battle will determine the destiny of our people and the nation's past, present and future," he said.

Assad has not spoken in public since a bomb on July 18 killed four of his top security officials during a rebel assault on Damascus and has only appeared on television once. His whereabouts are unknown and it is not even clear if he is in the capital.

He was echoed by his newly appointed defense minister, Gen. Fahd al-Freij, whose predecessor was killed in the bombing. He told the army to chase after armed groups and "kill them, preserving the homeland from their evils and restoring peace and security to the country."

Syria's powerful military, which has largely held together over the course of the uprising, is vital to keeping Assad in power. The pace of defections has been rising recently, however. Neighboring Turkey reports that 28 generals have already crossed the border.

In recent weeks, the military has unleashed heavy weapons against the increasingly bold rebels who have brought the fight to the country's two largest cities. The military managed to drive the rebels out of the capital Damascus a week after their assault with fierce bombardments of neighborhoods followed by house-to-house searches.

Minor clashes with the rebels around Damascus continue, however, and in the early hours of the morning Wednesday residents of the Christian neighborhood of Bab Touma in the old city of Damascus reported a half-hour gun battle.

Government forces also broke up two rebel cells in the capital, killing and wounding several, according to the state news agency.

There was also ongoing fighting in several other cities, including central Homs, on Wednesday. Homs saw sharp clashes between rebels and regime forces and was bombarded by mortars, artillery and rockets, according to the activist group Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

In Aleppo, the state news agency reported several victories by government forces, especially in the hotly contested rebel bastion of Salaheddine, saying dozens of "terrorists" had been killed, including some with "African" nationalities.

A high-ranking Western diplomat familiar with the intelligence assessments on Syria said earlier this week that there is a great deal of concern in the West over the flow of foreign militants into Syria to fight a jihad, or holy war, against Assad's regime.

Militants from Chechnya, Yemen, Libya, Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan have been joining the rebels in significant number, he said. They are entering by way of Iraq and Lebanon and bringing along skills gleaned from battling the Americans and Russians, according to the diplomat, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss such matters.

In a message appearing on online jihadist forums, Syrian militant Abu Hussam al-Shami called on Muslims to come fight a jihad, or holy war, against the regime because it had committed atrocities against its own people.

"We will not be satisfied until we turn you into ashes like those under a cooking pot," he said, addressing the regime in the nearly 10 minute video translated by the U.S.-based SITE Monitoring Service, which tracks extremist messages.

Ukraine's Foreign Ministry spokesman Oleksandr Dikusarov said a Ukrainian military plane took off from Aleppo with 138 Ukrainians, 15 Poles who were trapped by the fighting. The plane stopped over briefly in Damascus to pick up some 40 Ukrainians before heading for Kiev's Boryspil airport.

The evacuees reached Aleppo airport safely, despite attacks on the access road, said Polish Foreign Ministry spokesman Marcin Bosacki. Most of those evacuated were women married to Syrian men along with their children.

Rome-based World Food Program said it was sending to Aleppo enough emergency food aid for 28,000 people. The U.N. agency is distributing rations along with its local partner, the Syrian Arab Red Crescent.

Turkey launched a military drill just across the border from a Syrian town it claims is controlled by Kurdish rebels ? a show of muscle aimed at Kurdish separatists pushing for autonomy within Turkey's borders.

The Turkish government last week said Turkish Kurdish rebels have seized control of five towns along the border in collaboration with their Syrian counterparts. Turkey alleges that the Kurdish guerrillas they are fighting have taken advantage of the strife in Syria to take refuge there.

The idea that Syria, like northern Iraq, could become a safe haven for Turkish Kurdish rebels is an anathema to Turkey's leaders, who otherwise have been very supportive to the rebels fighting Assad.
